Making H-frames for Cattle Fencing

Right now we are finishing up a field full of H-frames for the Cocchiaro’s cattle fence project. We drilled the holes, set the posts in concrete, and constructed the H-frame units. They will be installing the line posts, insulators, and high-tensile wire themselves once we are done with the fence’s ‘foundation’.

Think of an H-frame as the foundation of a building. It is the unseen and under-appreciated but most important part of the structure if you value longevity. H-frames are necessary wherever the is a discontinuity in the fence line, whether it is a corner or a gate opening. H-frames are also a good idea wherever there is a long span of wire or where a splice is to be made.

H-Frames are one of the most important components of high-tensile or woven wire type fences. H-frames consist of a corner (or terminating post), an adjacent support post, a horizontal post pinned in place,  and a diagonal wire to keep the entire unit plumb and square.  Both vertical posts are set in a large amount of concrete to act as a ballast and surround the post with an inert substance as opposed to active soil.
