Shelling Corn for the Critters

March 8, 2015Uncategorizedcorn, fabrication, feed, feed corn, milling, shellingadmin

The chickens and pigs need some corn! We rigged up a motor to an old corn sheller. Made it so the RPMs were just right by 2 sets of pulleys with the correct ratios. No more hand cranking here! (Note chickens cleaning up the scraps). Later we run the corn through an old industrial coffee grinder to get cracked corn.

Pasture Renovation Time

March 8, 2015UncategorizedGene, Mac, pasture, pasture renovation, renovation, seedingadmin

At the last moment, just as the snow has melted. There is a little time left to drill in some seed, fertilize, and lime.  But lots of raking out the old thatch, old hay, and weeds before then. Almost there.

Scraping away the mud and topsoil to lay a road base and then some gravel. The path from the barn to the head of the pasture will be much cleaner driving. roadcut1

Snow is melting

March 2, 2015Uncategorizedmud, snow, winteradmin

The snow is melting, but now it really is a muddy mess. This stuff needs to dry up soon, so I can get back to work on pasture renovation projects at my farm and others.
